Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to the late Head of State, General Sani Abacha, has officially declared his intention to contest for the presidency in the upcoming 2027 general elections under the Social Democratic Party (SDP).
Al-Mustapha made this declaration during a strategic meeting with the state executive committee of SDP in Minna, Niger State, as political activities begin to gain momentum ahead of the 2027 polls.
Expressing deep concern about Nigeria's current state, Al-Mustapha said, "I am pained and deeply concerned about the current state of the nation. However, with the right direction and commitment, Nigeria can rise again. Though the road ahead may be rough, together we can rebuild the Nigeria we all deserve."
The presidential aspirant described the Minna meeting as part of a broader engagement strategy with stakeholders across the country in preparation for the 2027 elections.
Responding to the declaration, SDP State Chairman, Alhaji Buhari Yakubu Yarima, welcomed Al-Mustapha's presidential ambition and praised his commitment to national service.
"We are confident that with credible candidates and a clear vision, the SDP will be a force to reckon with in 2027," Yarima stated.
SDP's Position in Opposition Coalition
Earlier reports had suggested that the SDP was being positioned as a vehicle for an opposition coalition led by former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. However, the party's former presidential candidate, Adewale Adebayo, has clarified that SDP is not part of any such coalition.
Al-Mustapha's declaration adds a significant dimension to the emerging political landscape as Nigeria prepares for the post-Tinubu era.
