The Abia State Civil Service Commission has officially suspended the employment of health workers that was previously advertised by the State Ministry of Health, according to a statement released on Wednesday.

The announcement, signed by the Chairman of Abia State Civil Service Commission, Eno Jerry Eze, indicated that the public would be duly informed when the employment exercise resumes.

In a corresponding move, the Abia State Ministry of Health has also recalled its recent online advertisement for healthcare worker positions. Dr. Ifeyinwa Blossom Uma-Kalu, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Health, explained that proper protocol requires the Ministry to coordinate with the Civil Service Commission before initiating any recruitment exercise.

"The Ministry does not recruit staff without recourse to the Abia State Civil Service Commission," Dr. Uma-Kalu clarified. She expressed regret over the inconvenience the withdrawal might cause applicants who had already submitted their applications.

Dr. Uma-Kalu further stated that her Ministry would now work in collaboration with the Civil Service Commission to conduct a proper recruitment process for health workers in the state.

Neither statement addressed whether the suspended recruitment was related to the 771 health staff positions that Governor Alex Otti had approved for recruitment in April 2025.

The development comes as part of ongoing efforts to streamline recruitment processes within the state's civil service system and ensure proper coordination between government departments.

Interested candidates and stakeholders are advised to await further official communications regarding the resumption of the recruitment exercise.
