Nigeria's Super Falcons are set to intensify their preparations for the 2024 Women's Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) as they open camp in Portugal this week, BenriNews reports.
The nine-time African champions, under the guidance of head coach Justine Madugu, will face Portugal in an international friendly match on Monday, June 23, as part of their build-up to the continental showpiece.
Recent Preparations and Squad Selection
The Super Falcons are coming off an impressive 2-0 victory against the Indomitable Lionesses of Cameroon in a friendly match played at the Moshood Abiola Sports Arena in Abeokuta two weeks ago. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade scored both goals in that encounter, showcasing her leadership on the pitch.
According to sources, Coach Madugu has already submitted his squad list for the Portugal camp to the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), with the final selection expected to be made public this week.
WAFCON 2024 Tournament Details
Following their training camp and friendly in Portugal, the team will travel directly to Morocco for the WAFCON 2024 tournament. Nigeria's campaign begins with an opening fixture against Tunisia at the Larbi Zaouli Stadium in Casablanca on Sunday, July 6.
The Super Falcons have been drawn in a group that also includes Botswana and Algeria, as they aim to secure their record-extending tenth continental title.
Captain Ajibade has already expressed the team's determination to reclaim the WAFCON trophy, stating that they are "going for the tenth title" in this year's competition.
The tournament represents an important opportunity for the Super Falcons to reassert their dominance in African women's football after finishing fourth in the previous edition.
