Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru has shared his remarkable life journey, revealing how he rose from humble beginnings as a bus conductor and bricklayer to become the state's chief executive.
Speaking during a night-long Adoration programme held on Tuesday in Abakaliki to mark his administration's second anniversary, Nwifuru recounted his struggles before entering politics, including searching for bricklaying jobs that paid just ₦1,000 per day.
From Menial Jobs to Government House
"I joined Adoration when I was a conductor, and any time we have some little issues and we are sleeping at Enugu, I would go to Adoration ground, especially in 2001 to 2003 when Adoration witnessed a lot of crisis," the governor said.
Nwifuru expressed gratitude for his political ascension, acknowledging Father Mbaka as his spiritual leader and consultant. "Father Mbaka has been my spiritual leader, consultant in so many ways. He is trustworthy and reliable. He never looked at my shortcomings even though a lot of people would have allowed that to becloud them," he stated.
The governor emphasized that his position is not a right but a privilege to serve the people of Ebonyi State. He reflected on his rapid rise from manual labor to political leadership.
"Even before I contested my second election in 2007, I was still a bricklayer, and less than five years later, I became the Speaker of the State House of Assembly – a bricklayer who was looking for a job to get one thousand naira per day – and like a joke, I'm now your governor," Nwifuru said.
A Message for Nigerian Youth
Nwifuru views his journey as divinely orchestrated, stating that God brought him to his current position as an example to Nigerian youths. He requested prayers from citizens to help him fulfill his mandate effectively.
"Pray for me not to disappoint God so the youths will not suffer," the governor appealed, underscoring the responsibility he feels toward younger generations.
The governor's story resonates as an inspirational tale of perseverance and determination in Nigerian politics, showing how someone from the humblest beginnings can rise to a position of leadership.
