President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has finally addressed the recent massacre in Yelewata, Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, where over 200 people were reportedly killed in an attack by suspected armed herdsmen.

Speaking during the inauguration of the Greater Abuja Water Supply Project in the Federal Capital Territory on Monday, President Tinubu expressed his condolences to the victims and people of Benue while appealing for calm and national unity.

"I sympathize with the Benue people. I've spoken to the governor, the leadership, and the people. I ask them to accept our condolences and try very, very consciously to maintain peace and harmony among themselves," Tinubu said.

Call for National Unity

The President described Nigeria as "a single large family living in the same house but in different rooms," emphasizing the importance of unity despite the country's diversity. "Living together in harmony will be the result of our diversity for prosperity," he added.

Addressing growing concerns over insecurity and communal violence, Tinubu urged Nigerians to exercise emotional restraint. "We should be able to manage our anger and frustrations," he stated.

Presidential Visit Announced

In a significant development, the President announced plans to personally visit Benue State. "I sympathize with those who have lost their lives. I will adjust my program and go see the Benue people on Wednesday," Tinubu confirmed.

The attack on Yelewata community has reportedly claimed over 200 lives, with at least 127 victims identified so far, according to local reports.

Meanwhile, Inspector General of Police Kayode Egbetokun has promised to end the violence in Benue, though specific security measures have not yet been detailed.

The President's response comes amid mounting pressure from Nigerians demanding decisive action to address the security challenges facing the country, particularly in the Middle Belt region where farmer-herder conflicts have intensified in recent years.
