The Deputy Spokesman of the House of Representatives, Hon. Philip Agbese, has expressed profound grief over the continuing wave of violence and killings in Benue State, describing the situation as "heartbreaking and unacceptable."
In a statement released on Monday, Agbese, who represents Ado/Okpokwu/Ogbadibo Federal Constituency, condemned the recent attack on Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area, where numerous residents were killed by suspected armed herdsmen.
"Our hearts are shattered. Benue has endured more bloodshed than any state should bear. We are tired of burying our people. We are tired of watching families destroyed and farmlands deserted. This carnage must stop," the lawmaker lamented.
Call for Urgent Intervention
Agbese criticized relevant authorities for failing to contain the violence despite repeated appeals, warning that continued silence from critical stakeholders could be interpreted as complicity in the ongoing crisis.
The lawmaker called on the Federal Government, security agencies, and all well-meaning Nigerians to intervene swiftly, emphasizing that the situation in Benue is not merely a security crisis but a humanitarian emergency requiring immediate attention.
"The situation is dire. Beyond politics, beyond religion, beyond tribe, we must come together as one people. The blood of our fathers, mothers, and children cries from the ground," Agbese stated.
Unity and Action
Agbese urged unity among Benue citizens regardless of party or ethnic affiliations and declared a three-day period of prayer and fasting. He called on religious and traditional leaders to stand in the gap for the state during this challenging time.
The lawmaker promised that the House of Representatives would intensify its oversight functions and ensure that those responsible for the killings are brought to justice. He also committed to raising a motion on the floor of the House to demand urgent action on the Benue crisis.
This development comes amid growing concerns about insecurity in Benue State, with several prominent Nigerians, including musician 2Face Idibia, recently speaking out about the deteriorating situation.
President Bola Tinubu has reportedly ordered enhanced security measures in the state and tasked Governor Hyacinth Alia with leading reconciliation efforts among affected communities.
