The Benue North East chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a strong condemnation of the escalating insecurity plaguing communities across Benue State, describing the ongoing attacks and killings by armed herders as an existential threat to the state.
In a communiqué issued on Saturday and read by the Zonal Vice Chairman, Hon. Abraham Waroh, following a meeting in Lessel-Ushongo, the opposition party criticized Governor Hyacinth Alia's approach to security matters, alleging that the attacks represent a grand agenda to take over ancestral lands.
"The party demands urgent, decisive action from the Hyacinth Alia-led government to bring lasting peace and stability to our state," Waroh stated in the communiqué. "The party sympathises with victims of Fulani terrorist attacks in the state, many of whom have lost loved ones and thousands displaced."
Support for Open Grazing Prohibition Law
The PDP reaffirmed its "unflinching support" for the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of 2017, which was enacted during the administration of former Governor Samuel Ortom. The party described the legislation as "the most effective and sustainable solution to Nigeria's security challenges" regarding community invasions by armed herders.
"We call on the current government to uphold and enforce this law without compromise," the statement emphasized.
Criticism of Unfulfilled Promises
The opposition party also called on Governor Alia to fulfill his campaign promise of returning internally displaced persons (IDPs) to their ancestral homes. According to the PDP, the governor had pledged to accomplish this within his first 100 days in office.
"However, two years into his tenure, the number of IDPs has tripled, and their plight remains unresolved," Waroh noted in the communiqué.
The party further urged Governor Alia to grant full autonomy to local governments, allowing council chairmen direct access to funds from the federation account, in line with a recent Supreme Court judgment.
Party Reaffirms Leadership
In other matters, the PDP Zone A publicly distanced itself from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and any coalition activities. The party passed a "resounding vote of confidence" on former Governor Samuel Ortom as the leader of the party in the state.
"We also reaffirm our support for Rt. Hon. Ezekiel Adaji, the state chairman, and the entire State Working Committee, recognising their dedication and leadership," Waroh concluded.
The statement comes amid growing concerns about the security situation in Benue State, which has witnessed numerous attacks on farming communities in recent years.
