The Nigeria Police Force has distributed welfare cheques totaling N14,911,511 to 18 families of police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty in Adamawa State.
Adamawa State Commissioner of Police, Dankombo Morris, presented the cheques to the next-of-kin of the deceased officers during a ceremony held at the State Police Command Headquarters in Yola on Monday. The funds were disbursed under the Group Life Assurance and IGP Family Welfare Scheme.
Speaking on behalf of Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun, CP Morris paid tribute to the fallen officers: "These men and women gave their lives in the line of duty. We may not bring them back, but we can bring some relief to the loved ones they left behind."
The Commissioner emphasized that the nearly N15 million payout reflects the IGP's commitment to prioritizing the welfare of all officers—whether serving, retired, or deceased—under his leadership.
Support for Grieving Families
The financial assistance aims to help families manage life after losing their breadwinners. Each beneficiary received an amount based on the rank of the deceased officer.
One of the beneficiaries, Mrs. Christiana Garba, whose husband Inspector Garba died in a gunfight with kidnappers last year, expressed her gratitude: "I thought the police had forgotten about us. But this cheque tells me they remember."
SP Suleiman Nguroje, the Police Public Relations Officer for Adamawa Command, provided additional context on the significance of the event, describing it as evidence of reform-minded leadership within the force.
"This is not a favour. It's a right. And we're happy that under IGP Egbetokun, the system is working," Nguroje told journalists.
The welfare initiative demonstrates the Nigeria Police Force's ongoing commitment to supporting the families of officers who make the ultimate sacrifice while serving the nation.
