The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa, on Monday visited Yelwata community in Guma Local Government Area of Benue State to assess the aftermath of a deadly attack that claimed approximately 160 lives.
The high-level military visit comes days after suspected armed herders and bandits reportedly carried out a massacre in the community on Friday night, leaving devastation in their wake.
Military Response to the Crisis
General Musa's visit is part of the military's efforts to evaluate the situation firsthand and reassure affected residents of the government's commitment to restoring peace and security in the region. The Defence Chief is also scheduled to meet with Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia at the Government House in Makurdi.
The attack has drawn widespread condemnation from various quarters, including political figures and celebrities. Former Senate President David Mark warned that continued government inaction might force people to resort to self-defense measures.
President Bola Tinubu has reportedly expressed sympathy to the leaders of Benue State and outlined the next line of action, though details of the federal government's response plan remain unclear.
Public Outcry
The killings have sparked outrage across Nigeria. Prominent figures including musician MI Abaga and comedian Sabinus have spoken out, with the latter pleading with the Nigerian government to intervene decisively.
Rapper Falz directly criticized President Tinubu's administration, suggesting it has demonstrated incapability in handling the security situation. Meanwhile, Ohanaeze Ndigbo, a socio-cultural organization, has decried the killings and demanded urgent government action.
The Yelwata massacre represents one of the deadliest attacks in Benue State in recent times, highlighting the ongoing security challenges in Nigeria's Middle Belt region, where farmer-herder conflicts have persisted for years.
