The Nigeria Police Force has arrested 14 individuals following Sunday's protest in Makurdi, Benue State capital, which began as a peaceful demonstration against rising insecurity but later descended into violence.

According to police reports, the protest started at Wurukum Roundabout as citizens expressed concerns over the security situation in the state. However, authorities claim the demonstration was subsequently hijacked by hoodlums intent on disrupting public peace.

The Benue State Police Command stated that tensions escalated when protesters refused to engage with the state's Deputy Governor, Barr. John Ode, and Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, who had arrived at the scene to appeal for calm.

Police Response and Escalation

DSP Udeme Edet, spokesperson for the Benue State Police Command, confirmed that officers deployed non-lethal crowd control measures including smoke and water cannons to disperse violent elements and ensure the Deputy Governor's safe evacuation.

"No casualties or injuries were recorded during the operation," the police statement emphasized.

In a separate but related incident later that day, alleged protest sympathizers blocked a road in Apir, on Makurdi's outskirts. The group reportedly intercepted a truck and set it ablaze with the driver trapped inside. The identity of the driver remains unknown at this time.

Arrests and Ongoing Investigation

Police have confirmed that fourteen suspects connected to the violent incidents have been apprehended and will face prosecution. Investigations continue as authorities work to identify additional individuals involved in the arson attack and public disturbances.

"The Benue State Police Command supports lawful civic engagement but will not tolerate violence, destruction of property, or threats to public safety," the statement concluded.

The protests come amid growing concerns about insecurity in Benue State, which has experienced several violent incidents in recent months.
