The Akwa Ibom State Chapter of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) has expelled its State Secretary, Ambassador Kelvin Umoh, following allegations of gross misconduct, blackmail, and actions deemed detrimental to the party's unity and integrity.
The decision was reached during a general meeting held on Sunday in Uyo, presided over by the Acting State Chairman, Elder Wisdom Udoka. The party simultaneously appointed Moses Antigha as the Acting Secretary to fill the vacancy.
Allegations Against the Former Secretary
According to a communiqué issued after the meeting, Umoh was accused of several infractions, including organizing secret meetings with selected members to instigate violence during general meetings, which stakeholders claimed hindered the party's progress and ability to execute its plans.
The party also alleged that Umoh had publicly contradicted official party decisions through unauthorized media appearances, bringing the party into disrepute. Additionally, he reportedly refused to sign essential financial documents, including a cheque for the remittance of 10% of funds generated from nomination form sales after the 2024 Local Government Elections.
In what the party described as a serious breach of protocol, Umoh allegedly attempted to unilaterally alter bank signatory documentation at the party's financial institution without proper authorization, violating established financial protocols.
Constitutional Basis for Expulsion
The expulsion followed due consultations with relevant party organs in line with the provisions of the YPP Constitution. The party cited Section 36.7 of its constitution, which prohibits unauthorized public disclosure of internal party matters, formation of parallel party structures, and disobedience to lawful directives – conducts capable of causing internal disaffection.
Following the expulsion, the party has directed Umoh to return all party documents and property in his possession to the YPP State Secretariat within 24 hours.
Party Leadership Reaffirms Commitment
In his address, Acting Chairman Elder Wisdom Udoka described the gathering as "a defining moment in the party's history, a moment of rebirth, a renewed sense of purpose, and an unwavering commitment to the core ideals of social democracy, inclusive governance, and accountability, which form the foundational pillars of the YPP."
Udoka paid tribute to the National Chairman of the YPP, Comrade Bishop Amakiri, whom he hailed as a visionary and dynamic leader. He also commended Emmanuel Ukpong Udo, the member representing Ikono/Ini Federal Constituency, for his steadfast loyalty and commitment to empowering his constituents, which he said reflects the YPP's values of service and progressive leadership.
The party reaffirmed its commitment to upholding internal discipline, transparency, and unity under the leadership of Elder Wisdom Udoka as the Acting Chairman, urging members to remain focused on the party's rebirth agenda and democratic mission.
