The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ondo State has declared that the media has become the common man's last hope following what they described as the failure of the three arms of government. The opposition party made this statement while emphasizing the need for increased scrutiny of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) at both state and federal levels.

PDP Publicity Secretary in Ondo, Leye Igbabo, expressed these views during an address at the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Press Centre in Akure, where he voiced strong criticism of the APC-led government under President Bola Tinubu's administration.

Economic Hardship Fueling Discontent

According to the opposition party, there is widespread dissatisfaction among Nigerians regarding the security and economic situation in the country. The PDP highlighted that most families are struggling to feed themselves due to what they termed "astronomical prices of essential commodities."

"I am disappointed in the administration of the ruling party. Inflation is at an all-time high. Prices of essential commodities have skyrocketed, and people can no longer afford to feed their families," Igbabo stated during the press engagement.

Criticism of Political Defections

The PDP spokesperson also frowned at the recent wave of defections among politicians to the ruling party, emphasizing that the trend was motivated by opportunism rather than principle. This comes as several politicians across the country have been switching allegiance to the APC in recent months.

The party called on the media to put the APC government on its toes through increased scrutiny of their performance in delivering democratic dividends to Nigerians, suggesting that as the fourth estate of the realm, the media now represents the last hope for the common citizen.
