The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Abia State has announced plans to challenge a High Court judgment that sought to disqualify its chairmanship and councilorship candidates for the November 2, 2024 local government elections in the state.
Abraham Amah, Chairman of the Abia PDP, made this known while addressing an expanded South East zonal meeting on Friday in Umuahia. He stated that the party would be heading to the Appeal Court in Owerri next week to contest the ruling.
Clarification on Court Ruling
Amah also took the opportunity to debunk rumors circulating that the court had dissolved all structures of the party from ward to state level. According to him, the judgment had been misinterpreted by some individuals.
"We started waiting for the CTC (Certified True Copy) from the 6th of May, 2025 and few days ago, we received the CTC. The judgment was very clear and simple. No executive from ward to state level was disqualified," Amah explained.
"The judgment only tried to disqualify our councilorship and local government chairmanship candidates of the last local government election. But for whatever reason that was done, we have decided to go to Appeal," he added.
The PDP chairman confirmed that all necessary legal papers have been filed at the Bende High Court and would be submitted to the Court of Appeal in Owerri by next week.
Party Unity in South East
During the meeting, Amah praised former Abia State Governor Okezie Ikpeazu and Senator Austin Akobundu, who represents Abia Central, for their contributions to the growth and unity of the PDP in Abia.
The gathering also saw PDP National Vice Chairman South East, Chidiebere Goodluck, PDP Deputy National Legal Adviser, Okechukwu Osuoha, and the Chairmen of PDP in the five South East States recognize Samuel Anyanwu as the authentic National Secretary of the PDP.
The appeal is expected to be a significant test for the party as it prepares for future electoral contests in the state.
