Social commentator Reno Omokri has revealed details of a recent telephone conversation with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, emphasizing that despite his current support for President Bola Tinubu, he maintains a cordial relationship with Atiku.
In a post on his official Facebook page, Omokri disclosed that Atiku had praised his credibility during their conversation. "I literally just had a conversation with Waziri Atiku Abubakar, who said to me, and I quote, 'You, Reno, have credibility that others don't have,'" Omokri wrote.
Tension with Atiku's Spokesperson
The former presidential aide took issue with Atiku's spokesperson, Paul Ibe, for allegedly speaking ill of him. Omokri clarified that unlike Segun Showunmi, who has criticized the former VP, he has "NEVER publicly or privately criticised Alhaji Atiku Abubakar" despite now supporting President Tinubu.
"I counsel Mr Ibe to note the difference and not bundle everyone in the same category," Omokri stated, advising the spokesperson to "speak to his boss before speaking ill of me" and to "do his research very well before misrepresenting the facts."
Continued Relationship Despite Political Differences
Omokri emphasized that his transition from supporting Atiku to endorsing President Tinubu occurred "without acrimony or bitterness." He revealed that they still communicate regularly, stating, "We still talk and maintain most cordial relations."
"I say it loud and clear without shame that Mr Atiku Abubakar has been good to me, and I never quarreled with him," Omokri declared. He even mentioned consulting Atiku recently for a book he is writing, describing the former VP as "a good man."
Omokri concluded by referencing his reputation for loyalty, noting that former President Goodluck Jonathan had described him as "the most loyal person in his administration." He affirmed, "I never turn on my friends except they first turn on me."
While Omokri has made his current political allegiance clear, his comments highlight the complex personal relationships that often exist behind Nigeria's political divides.
