The Jigawa State Police Command has apprehended 14 male suspects allegedly involved in a fake currency operation following a coordinated intelligence-led raid in Birnin Kudu Local Government Area.

State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Lawan Shiisu, confirmed the arrests in a statement issued on Friday in Dutse, the state capital. According to Shiisu, the suspects were captured on Thursday during a joint security operation at a criminal hideout in Digawa village.

Items Recovered During the Operation

The raid, which took place in the early hours of Thursday, yielded a significant cache of incriminating items. Security personnel recovered nine fabricated pistols, seven dane guns, four motorcycles, 12 pieces of fake USD, and 188 pieces of suspected counterfeit Central African Currency. Additional items seized included charms, as well as a bow and arrow.

"The operation, which took place in the early hours of Thursday followed credible intelligence reports about the activities of a syndicate involved in fraudulent practices and other criminal acts within the region," Shiisu stated.

Connection to Recent Violence

The police spokesperson revealed that the arrests came shortly after a violent incident linked to the same group. On Wednesday, suspected fraudsters from Digawa village allegedly attacked Dumus village for refusing to support their illegal activities. The attack resulted in the death of one villager, identified as Isma'il Ibrahim, while eight others sustained injuries.

All 14 suspects are currently in custody undergoing thorough investigation, after which they will face court proceedings.

"This operation underscores our unwavering commitment to safeguarding communities and rooting out criminal elements. The public is encouraged to continue cooperating with security agencies by reporting suspicious activities promptly," Shiisu added.
