President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has openly mocked opposition parties, particularly the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), stating that he finds pleasure in witnessing their internal crises and confusion.

Speaking during his Democracy Day address at the National Assembly on Thursday, Tinubu firmly denied allegations that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is working to transform Nigeria into a one-party state.

"To those who ring the alarm that the APC is intent on a one-party state, I offer you a most personal promise... I have never attempted to alter any political party registration with INEC," the President declared.

Tinubu described the concerns raised by opposition parties as unnecessary, suggesting they should focus on resolving their internal issues rather than spreading unfounded fears.

"Political parties fearful of members leaving may be better served by examining their internal processes and affairs rather than fearfully conjuring up demons that do not exist," he stated.

In a particularly pointed remark, the President added: "For me, I would say try your best to put your house in order. I will not help you do so. It is, indeed, a pleasure to witness you in such disarray."

Embracing Political Diversity

Despite his critical stance toward opposition parties, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of political diversity in Nigeria's democratic landscape.

"We must welcome and accept the diversity and number of political parties just as we welcome and embrace the diversity of our population," he said.

The President further clarified that his administration's goal is not to eliminate political competition but to ensure that such competition contributes positively to national development.

"Our efforts must never be to eliminate political competition but to make that competition salutary to the national well-being by working across the political aisle whenever possible," Tinubu concluded.

The Democracy Day address comes amid growing concerns from opposition parties about their dwindling influence in Nigeria's political landscape, with some members defecting to the ruling APC in recent months.
