Socio-political activist Reno Omokri has vehemently denied allegations that his support for President Bola Tinubu's administration is financially motivated, insisting that his backing stems from patriotism and love for Nigeria.

Speaking during an appearance on Channels TV on Wednesday, Omokri, who has been known for his criticism of opposition figures, particularly Labour Party's presidential candidate Peter Obi, addressed rumors that he is on the payroll of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government.

"So who was paying me between 2025 and 2023 when I was traveling over on matters concerning Nigeria?" Omokri questioned. "Why would anyone give me money? I'm doing this not just for the love I have for Tinubu but the love I have for Nigeria."

The former presidential spokesperson has consistently supported most of President Tinubu's policies, drawing criticism from opposition supporters who question his motives.

Self-Funded Advocacy

To further counter the allegations, Omokri detailed his recent self-funded trip to Lagos to verify progress on the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway project.

"Right now, I'm in Lagos and I don't live here. I came to Lagos because people have spread wrong information about the Lagos-Calabar coastal highway," he explained. "I bought a ticket with my own money, then I came and gathered journalists. I also gathered members of the public, ordinary Nigerians. I bought a drone with my own money to verify that indeed the 30 kilometers highway is complete."

Omokri has been a polarizing figure in Nigerian politics, particularly for his frequent criticism of Peter Obi and other opposition leaders while defending government policies.

The activist's comments come amid growing scrutiny of political commentators and their potential affiliations with the current administration.
