Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, has raised serious concerns about the deplorable condition of Government Secondary School in Chibok, Borno State—the institution that gained global attention after the 2014 Boko Haram kidnapping of over 200 schoolgirls.

According to Obi's recent Facebook update, activist Aisha Yesufu informed him that the school, which serves more than 2,500 students, currently operates without functional science laboratories, electricity, and has only a single desktop computer.

Responding to Yesufu's appeal for assistance, Obi attempted to visit the school personally but was advised against it due to security concerns in the region. Instead, he arranged a meeting with Chibok community leaders in Abuja.

Substantial Support for Educational Development

During the meeting, Obi presented the community representatives with 10 laptops and 3 printers. He also made a financial contribution of ₦6 million, allocating ₦2 million each toward establishing a computer classroom, equipping a science laboratory, and constructing a handheld motorised borehole.

"We must prioritise critical areas of development... our children deserve more than broken labs and empty classrooms," Obi emphasized in his statement.

The former governor clarified that his intervention was not merely a donation but represented his personal commitment to the future of the Chibok community. He expressed profound disappointment over what he described as Nigeria's misplaced priorities, condemning the practice of government officials spending billions on luxuries while basic educational infrastructure remains neglected.

Obi concluded his message with a call for national re-prioritisation, urging both citizens and leaders to focus resources on critical sectors including education, healthcare, and poverty alleviation.

The Chibok school case highlights the ongoing challenges facing educational institutions in Nigeria's conflict-affected regions, nearly a decade after the infamous kidnapping incident that brought international attention to the area.
