Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party figure, Mr. Peter Obi, has responded to critics who claim he performed poorly as governor, stating that such criticisms stem from his refusal to spend public funds on media self-promotion.
In an interview with Arise Television's Morning Show anchor, Rufai Oseni, aired on Monday, Obi defended his governance record while addressing accusations about his performance.
"The only reason I didn't do well – I wasn't in the media. I wasn't going about paying media people advertising myself and everything. Because, maybe, because I have a little bit of concern about giving people money, because it was public money, that's all," Obi explained.
Governance Over Self-Promotion
The Labour Party figure highlighted his administration's achievements, particularly regarding counterpart funding with donor agencies. "Go and ask all the donor agencies who was the first to pay his counterpart funding. Ask everybody," he stated.
Obi further challenged his critics to assess his popularity in Anambra State, suggesting that residents could attest to his performance. "I'm inviting you any day in Anambra State. Let's walk the streets and people will tell you who is this man," he said.
In a personal revelation, the former governor mentioned that Anambra is the only place where he owns a house in his name, emphasizing his modest lifestyle despite having served as a state governor.
The interview comes amid ongoing political discussions about governance styles and public fund management in Nigeria, with Obi positioning himself as a politician who prioritized service delivery over media visibility during his tenure.
