The Nigerian Government has announced that the Federal Civil Service will transition to a fully digital system, eliminating paper usage by December 2025. This announcement was made by the Head of Civil Service of the Federation, Dr. Didi Esther Walson-Jack, during a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to Dr. Walson-Jack, this initiative aligns with the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan for 2021–2025, which is scheduled to conclude by the end of next year.

"Even before I assumed office, the Office of the Head of Civil Service of the Federation had already gone paperless. We are now working to accelerate this transformation across all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies," she stated.

She further revealed that the Federal Ministry of Health recently became the 11th ministry to implement the Enterprise Content Management Systems (ECMS), marking significant progress in the paperless transition. Other ministries are at various stages of implementation, with partners engaged to help fund digital transitions in some ministries.

Civil Service Week and African Public Service Day

Dr. Walson-Jack also announced the upcoming 2025 African Public Service Day and Nigeria's Civil Service Week, scheduled to run from Friday, June 20 to Saturday, June 28, 2025.

"In the same week, a historic inaugural International Civil Service Conference will be held in Abuja, Nigeria, from 25th to 26th June 2025. These events represent a defining moment in our ongoing journey to reposition the Nigerian Civil Service as a 21st-century engine for national development, regional and international leadership," she said.

The 2025 Civil Service Week will feature various activities including:

  • Commissioning of the remodelled Reception for the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation
  • Special Juma'at Prayer at the National Mosque
  • Thanksgiving Service at the Family Worship Centre, Wuye
  • Study Tour of the Federal Civil Service and Abuja by State's Heads of Civil Service

The Head of Civil Service emphasized that hosting the International Civil Service Conference directly expresses Nigeria's commitment to the Federal Civil Service Strategy and Implementation Plan (FCSSIP25), with its core pillars of Capability Building, Performance Management, and Digitalisation.
