Retired Major Hamza Al-Mustapha, former Chief Security Officer to late Head of State General Sani Abacha, has officially confirmed his intention to contest in Nigeria's 2027 presidential election, emphasizing that his bid is serious this time.
"God willing, I only tested it, but this time I'm serious about running," Al-Mustapha declared during an interview with the BBC Hausa service, where he addressed various national issues including Nigeria's democracy, security challenges, and poverty.
Election Integrity Concerns
The presidential hopeful revealed he has initiated discussions with international observers regarding Nigeria's electoral process, alleging that past election results were manipulated rather than accurately counted.
"That is why we have discussed with foreign countries, asking them to closely monitor Nigeria, especially regarding the elections, because election results are usually written," he stated.
Stance on Political Alliances
Al-Mustapha firmly ruled out joining any political alliance that contradicts his principles and ideology. "If their ideology is different from ours, then I don't want to be part of something shameful that would bring dishonor to the country with my involvement," he emphasized.
When questioned about potentially supporting other candidates like Atiku Abubakar, he dismissed the possibility, stating, "There is no possibility of our paths crossing politically, so there's no need for that question."
This announcement marks Al-Mustapha's third attempt at the presidency, following unsuccessful bids in the 2019 and 2023 general elections.
