Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has given strong indications of his intention to contest in Nigeria's 2027 presidential election, promising to wage war against corruption if elected.

Speaking in Hausa language to a group of supporters, Atiku made a firm commitment to tackle corruption head-on. "I swear to God, if elected, whoever steals or engages in any corruption-related activities, we will declare war against them and they must be punished," he declared in a video shared on X (formerly Twitter).

Atiku, who contested the 2023 presidential election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform, is now reportedly aligned with the African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition. While he has not officially announced his defection from PDP, he has been playing a significant role in the opposition coalition.

New Political Alignment

The ADC coalition recently announced its leadership structure, naming former Senate President David Mark as Interim National Chairman and former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola as Interim National Secretary, among other key positions.

This development comes amid growing realignments in Nigeria's political landscape ahead of the 2027 general elections. Atiku's apparent shift to the ADC coalition represents a significant move that could reshape opposition politics in the country.

The former Vice President's anti-corruption stance echoes one of the most persistent concerns among Nigerian voters, who have consistently ranked corruption as a major issue affecting governance and development in the country.

Political analysts suggest that Atiku's early positioning could be strategic, giving him ample time to build a formidable coalition against the ruling party before the 2027 elections.
