Famous media personality, Yeni Kuti, and Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), engaged in a heated exchange on national television over Sowunmi's recent visit to President Bola Tinubu.
BenriNews reports that Sowunmi, the former spokesman for Atiku Abubakar during the 2023 presidential election, visited President Tinubu at his Lagos residence over the weekend. The visit has sparked widespread reactions and criticism online, particularly given Sowunmi's previous vocal criticism of the president.
Tension on Live Television
The clash occurred during TVC's Your View programme on Tuesday when Yeni Kuti, one of the hosts, pointedly asked Sowunmi: "When are you moving to the APC?"
Elaborating on her question, Kuti said, "You've had a lot of criticism for the president, now your tune seems to have changed (after visit). So when is your own move? When are you leaving the PDP to join APC?"
Visibly displeased with the line of questioning, Sowunmi responded sharply: "Although I cannot see who is asking those questions, I didn't come to your programme so you can try to be cheeky with me, stop that."
The exchange quickly escalated when Kuti retorted, "I can't be cheeky with you because I'm sure that I'm older than you."
Attempting to defuse the situation, Sowunmi backtracked, saying, "Oh sister oo! My Aunty! I take that back. Please don't be angry."
However, the 64-year-old media personality firmly responded, "I'm not your aunty," further intensifying the on-air tension.
Political Context
The confrontation highlights the ongoing political dynamics in Nigeria, where politicians' allegiances and criticisms often come under scrutiny. Sowunmi's visit to President Tinubu has raised questions about his position within the opposition PDP, especially given his previous role as spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, who contested against Tinubu in the last presidential election.
Political analysts suggest that such visits often fuel speculation about potential political realignments, particularly as Nigeria's political landscape continues to evolve under the current administration.
The video of the exchange has since gone viral on social media, drawing various reactions from Nigerians about the nature of political discourse in the country.
