Former Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Ogun State, Segun Sowunmi, has revealed that he discussed succession planning with President Bola Tinubu during their recent meeting at the President's Lagos residence.
Speaking during an interview on Arise News on Tuesday evening, Sowunmi disclosed details of his conversation with the President, emphasizing that they discussed the future of Nigeria's leadership rather than personal appointments.
"I did not discuss the possibility of any appointment with President Tinubu, he did not offer me any appointment," Sowunmi clarified. "That's not the kind of conversation I should be having with [the President]."
Succession Planning Discussion
Sowunmi revealed that he challenged the President on Nigeria's leadership transition plans. "I said to him, 'if I conceive this thing you're doing is hard work and I know it's hard work, are you not going to start planning succession? Won't you plan succession? Won't this country think on how to move to younger people,'" he recounted.
The former spokesperson to ex-Vice President Atiku Abubakar defended his meeting with Tinubu, expressing frustration at critics questioning his visit. "I greeted the President, took a picture and they're going gaga. I'm not going to fall for that cheap madness," he stated.
Political Independence
Addressing speculation about his political allegiance, Sowunmi emphasized his independence while acknowledging his PDP roots. "My political course is not just opposition. I've been down loyal to the PDP. Nobody should have any idea that I've been part of any other people doing opposition for opposition's sake, I'm not part of such," he explained.
"I wonder where we took an oath that I have to take permission from them before leaving the party," he added, suggesting he maintains his freedom to engage with political figures across party lines.
The meeting between Sowunmi and President Tinubu comes amid ongoing discussions about Nigeria's political future and leadership transition strategies.
