Police authorities in Benue State have arrested a serving police inspector and two civilians who narrowly escaped being lynched by an angry mob after allegedly stealing electric cables in Makurdi, the state capital.
The incident occurred on the morning of June 10, around 8:00 a.m., when officers from the 'D' Division responded to a distress call about individuals breaking into a shop behind Alhaji Dash House in Ankpa Quarters.
Dramatic Rescue Operation
According to police sources, by the time officers arrived at the scene, an angry crowd had already surrounded the suspects and begun attacking them. A patrol team was quickly dispatched and managed to rescue the three individuals from what could have been a fatal mob justice situation.
The suspects were later identified as Mohammed Umaru, 49; Mohammad Mutala, 27; and Inspector Innocent Ishaku, a serving police officer who reportedly sustained serious injuries during the mob attack.
Officer Facing Disciplinary Action
Inspector Ishaku was immediately taken to the police clinic in Makurdi for treatment and was discharged after receiving medical care. Further investigation revealed that the police officer was previously attached to PMF 13 in Makurdi but had been transferred to the Kaduna State Command approximately six months ago.
The officer is currently in custody and facing internal disciplinary procedures. He has been marked for a formal trial within the police disciplinary system, known as an orderly room trial.
This incident highlights growing concerns about misconduct within security agencies and the increasing trend of mob justice in response to alleged criminal activities in the region.
