Human rights lawyer Barrister Victor Giwa has formally petitioned the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, requesting an investigation into alleged misconduct by the Commissioner of Police, Legal Services, Chiozoba Oyakhire Ehiede, and one Ms. Asabe Waziri over what he described as frivolous charges filed against him.

In his letter dated May 23, 2025, Giwa specifically called for an investigation into allegations of financial inducement behind the charges. He also requested the IGP's intervention to uncover any potential connection between Waziri and the CP Legal, while seeking the withdrawal of the charge against him and a re-investigation of charge No. CR/150/25.

According to Giwa, he is being prosecuted merely for "standing against falsehood and lies and insisting that the right thing should be done" in relation to a property dispute in Maitama, Abuja.

The petition details a troubling incident that allegedly occurred on June 26, 2024, when police officers led by CSP Maga forcefully broke into an apartment at No. 1 Mekong Close, Maitama, Abuja, and put Waziri in possession of the property. Giwa claims this action was carried out despite pending legal proceedings, including an application for Stay of Execution, a Notice of Appeal (CA/ABJ/CV/246/2022), and a court order from the High Court in Keffi, Nasarawa State.

"In a reckless manner, I was arrested as the lawyer to Cecil Osakwe and the Abeh Signature Apartment, forcefully taken to the apartment, and made to open the flats," Giwa stated in his petition. "I insisted that I would not be able to do that, since the matter is subject of litigation in both the Supreme Court and the High Court."

The lawyer further alleged that despite his protests, police officers broke down the doors of the flats and allowed Waziri to take possession, where she reportedly remains to date.

Giwa accused the CP Legal of abusing his office by filing charges against him based on Waziri's petition, describing the charge (No. CR/150/25) filed at the FCT High Court as "baseless, frivolous, and vindictive" and designed to "embarrass and harass" him.

"I humbly submit that the current charge against me in Charge No. CR/150/25 is self-serving and borne out of Asabe Waziri's quest to use the CP Legal to deal with me," he concluded in his petition.

As of press time, there has been no official response from the Office of the Inspector-General of Police regarding the petition. The case highlights ongoing concerns about property disputes in the Federal Capital Territory and allegations of abuse of power within law enforcement agencies.
