The Edo State Police Command has arrested several of its personnel who were caught on video vandalizing a vehicle during a response to a recent protest by suspected internet fraudsters in Benin City.

Police Public Relations Officer Moses Yamu confirmed on Wednesday that the arrested officers, identified as members of the Command's Quick Response Team, are currently undergoing disciplinary procedures in accordance with police regulations.

"Some officers were captured in a video conducting themselves in an unprofessional manner, smashing a vehicle parked at the location," Yamu stated. "As much as the Command condemns the act of attacking the IRT personnel, it views the conduct of the police during the rescue as highly unprofessional."

The incident occurred on May 20, 2025, following an attack on Intelligent Response Team (IRT) personnel by protesting youths at Okhuimwun Community. The IRT officers, who were in transit from Lagos through Edo State, suffered life-threatening injuries, and their vehicle was vandalized during the attack.

A reinforcement team was subsequently deployed to rescue the injured officers and arrest some of the individuals involved in the attack. However, during this operation, some police officers were filmed damaging a vehicle parked at the scene—behavior the Command has now officially condemned.

Edo State Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has called for mutual accountability from the public while reassuring residents of the Command's commitment to delivering policing services that align with best practices.

This disciplinary action comes as part of broader efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to address misconduct within its ranks and improve public trust in law enforcement agencies across the country.
