The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has issued a call to Nigerians to stand against what it describes as an attempt to establish a one-party state in the country. The opposition party made this declaration on Tuesday as it prepares for its National Convention scheduled for August in Kano.
According to the party, the upcoming convention will serve as a crucial platform to elect new national officers, strengthen internal democracy, and reposition the PDP as a formidable opposition force ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Convention Focus and Opposition Strategy
The PDP emphasized that its National Convention will prioritize merit, transparency, and inclusivity in selecting leaders capable of challenging what it termed the "misrule" of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
"Nigerians must therefore rise to resist the APC's sinister plot to transform Nigeria into a one-party totalitarian state," the party stated in its release.
The opposition party further criticized the Tinubu-led administration's economic policies, claiming they have caused "unprecedented hardship, with rising poverty, insecurity, and wanton killings plaguing the nation."
Allegations Against the Ruling Party
In its statement, the PDP accused the APC of attempting to stifle opposition voices through various means, including "sponsorship of crisis within political parties, threats, intimidation, and attacks on democratic institutions." These actions, according to the PDP, reveal the ruling party's fear of potential defeat in the 2027 elections.
"The PDP as a party that stands for the rule of law, and the supremacy of the will of the people is gearing up to restore democratic principles in 2027," the statement continued.
Call for Unity and Mobilization
The party urged Nigerians to reject what it described as "anti-people policies" of the APC and join forces with the PDP to build a united front aimed at reclaiming Nigeria's future.
According to the statement, the August 2025 National Convention will establish the foundation for a reinvigorated PDP that is prepared to lead efforts for a Nigeria "where every citizen thrives."
The party called on its members, stakeholders, and "patriotic Nigerians" to rally behind the PDP as it prepares to elect leaders who will champion the aspirations of the Nigerian people.
"Together, we will defeat the APC's authoritarian agenda and restore Nigeria to the path of progress, security, and economic stability," the statement concluded.
