A Nigerian man has shared a tragic incident involving a fellow patient who reportedly died due to alleged medical negligence at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital (LUTH). The witness, identified on social media platform X as @Jet Daniel, recounted how a patient in the bed adjacent to his suffocated after being fed pap despite explicit medical instructions prohibiting oral feeding.
According to the social media post, a nurse on duty allegedly authorized the patient's wife to feed him despite standing orders against it. Shortly after consuming the pap, the patient began experiencing severe breathing difficulties.
"The man wasn't meant to eat yet, but the nurse gave the wife the go-ahead to feed him pap. After he started experiencing breathing difficulties, the wife called the nurse and she was grumbling," the witness stated in his post.
The post further alleged that the nurse delayed responding to the emergency for approximately 10 minutes. When medical staff finally intervened, they reportedly struggled to locate necessary equipment, including suction catheters. Tragically, the patient died during this commotion.
Even more concerning were allegations about staff behavior following the incident. "When the family came, all the nurses, including their matron, went to change clothes and hide," the witness claimed.
Public Reaction to the Incident
The incident has sparked significant outrage on social media, with many Nigerians sharing their own negative experiences with public healthcare facilities.
One user commented, "You see that LUTH, pray not to take any of your family or loved ones there. Even if they come back alive, it would only take the person a few months before they die."
Another user expressed frustration with the healthcare system: "This is what I hate most about the health sector. You can spend millions and not get any result for the money spent and they do not care about that."
Several others shared personal experiences with teaching hospitals across Nigeria, highlighting what they perceive as systemic issues in the country's healthcare system.
As of the time of reporting, LUTH authorities have not issued an official statement regarding this incident. BenriNews will continue to monitor developments in this case.
This incident raises serious questions about patient safety protocols, staff training, and accountability measures within Nigeria's public healthcare institutions.
