Police operatives from Ekpan Division in Uvwie Local Government Area of Delta State have arrested an auxiliary nurse, Mrs. Odiase Ibhade Stella, in connection with the death of 21-year-old Miss Elizabeth Oyibode.
The arrest follows allegations that the nurse administered medications that left Oyibode paralyzed before her eventual death three days ago at the Central Hospital, Warri. Authorities have also shut down Stella's chemist shop located at New Era School, Off Jakpa road.
According to Comrade Derrick Oritsematosan Agberen, National Coordinator of Initiative For Social Rights Concerns And Advancement (ISRCA), the organization intercepted the unregistered nurse who had administered medications and intravenous drips to the deceased, allegedly resulting in brain and body paralysis that affected her ability to speak or interact.
"All thanks to the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) Ekpan Divisional Headquarters, CSP Shaba Aliyu, for responding swiftly to our petition," Agberen stated.
The incident reportedly began when the deceased's fiancé, Mr. Jonathan Okuma, consulted the nurse about his unusual bodily symptoms. The nurse allegedly diagnosed him with a bacterial infection and suggested that Oyibode, with whom he was cohabiting and had a child, should also undergo treatment.
According to Okuma's account, the nurse later claimed that Oyibode was suffering from typhoid and malaria. Despite his insistence that they complete the infection treatment before administering other medications, the nurse allegedly proceeded with unauthorized treatment.
"The suspected nurse who had again called Mr. Jonathan to send her money to run a diagnostic test on late Miss Elizabeth, converted the money to administering drips and the same medication he initially cautioned her against," Agberen explained. "When he returned from work, he met his fiancee lying down and receiving drips in her chemist shop."
This unauthorized treatment allegedly led to severe complications, resulting in paralysis of Oyibode's brain and body. She subsequently died at the Warri Central Hospital at the age of 21.
The ISRCA has vowed to ensure that this incident serves as a deterrent to others involved in illegal medical practices. The organization emphasized its commitment to pursuing justice in this case.
Police authorities have confirmed the arrest of Mrs. Odiase Ibhade Stella and the closure of her chemist shop as investigations continue into the circumstances surrounding Oyibode's death.
