Segun Sowunmi, a former spokesman to Atiku Abubakar, the ex-presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has indicated his willingness to defect from the party to support President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking on Arise Television's Prime Time on Tuesday evening, Sowunmi, who has been a PDP member for 28 years, stated that if he decides to support Tinubu in the 2027 elections, he would first leave the PDP and join the All Progressives Congress (APC).

"If I'm going to support Tinubu in 2027, by God and everything that is in me, I will leave and join his party," Sowunmi declared. "I don't believe in the nonsense that says you are in one party while supporting someone else."

Sowunmi emphasized his long-standing membership in the PDP, stating, "I have been in PDP for 28 years and most of them don't even have that record of 28 days."

Frustration with PDP Reform Efforts

The former Atiku spokesman expressed frustration with the lack of reform within the PDP despite his calls for change. "I have screamed and shouted that we needed to reform the party," he said.

Sowunmi further hinted at the likelihood of his departure from the party, citing various factors influencing his decision. "There is a very strong possibility, looking at what is going on in my environment, looking at my state where I come from, looking at my tribe and desire – there is a very strong possibility that I may likely leave."

His comments come amid ongoing realignments in Nigerian politics as parties prepare for the 2027 general elections. Sowunmi's potential defection would represent a significant shift, given his close association with Atiku Abubakar and his nearly three-decade membership in the PDP.

The development adds to the growing list of political realignments ahead of the next electoral cycle, with several prominent politicians reconsidering their party affiliations.
