Segun Sowunmi, a former spokesman to Atiku Abubakar, has indicated his willingness to leave the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after 28 years of membership to support President Bola Tinubu.

Speaking on Arise Television's Prime Time on Tuesday evening, Sowunmi stated that if he decides to support President Tinubu in the 2027 elections, he would first defect from the PDP to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

"If I'm going to support Tinubu in 2027, by God and everything that is in me, I will leave and join his party," Sowunmi declared. "I don't believe in the nonsense that says you are in one party while supporting someone else."

Long-standing PDP Membership

Sowunmi emphasized his lengthy affiliation with the PDP, stating, "I have been in PDP for 28 years and most of them don't even have that record of 28 days."

He expressed frustration with the current state of the party, revealing that he has repeatedly called for reforms within the PDP. "I have screamed and shouted that we needed to reform the party," he said.

Factors Influencing Potential Defection

The former Atiku spokesman cited several factors that could influence his decision to leave the opposition party, including developments in his state, considerations related to his ethnic background, and personal aspirations.

"There is a very strong possibility, looking at what is going on in my environment, looking at my state where I come from, looking at my tribe and desire – there is a very strong possibility that I may likely leave," Sowunmi explained.

This revelation comes amid ongoing internal challenges within the PDP following its defeat in the 2023 presidential election, where Atiku Abubakar lost to Bola Tinubu of the APC.

Sowunmi's potential defection could signal further realignments within Nigeria's political landscape as parties begin positioning for the 2027 general elections.
