Sociopolitical activist Aisha Yesufu has strongly criticized President Bola Tinubu following the renaming of the International Conference Centre (ICC) in Abuja after him.
The facility, which was recently renovated, was unveiled on Tuesday after being commissioned by President Tinubu. The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, renamed the facility as the "Bola Ahmed Tinubu International Conference Centre" during the ceremony.
Wike explained that the renovation was necessary because the facility had become "an embarrassment to Nigeria before the international community." He accused previous administrators of mismanaging the centre, assuring that such issues would not continue under the current administration.
Reacting to the renaming, Yesufu took to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) to express her displeasure, stating: "Tinubu has poverty mentality and abandonment issue. This is not normal."
The controversy has sparked reactions from other public figures, including former Senator Shehu Sani, who pointed out that the Abuja ICC was originally built during the Ibrahim Babangida administration.
Political commentator Dele Momodu also weighed in on the situation, suggesting that the country appears to have "two presidents" following Wike's actions and President Tinubu's response to critics, whom he reportedly referred to as "busybodies."
The renaming of the ICC adds to ongoing discussions about governance and leadership style in the current administration, with various stakeholders expressing differing opinions on the appropriateness of naming national facilities after sitting presidents.
