The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has called on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to zone its 2027 presidential ticket to southern Nigeria, citing principles of fairness and inclusion.

Wike made this appeal on Monday while reading a communiqué after a meeting of critical stakeholders under the banner of 'Concerned Stakeholders of the PDP.'

"In the spirit of fairness, inclusion, federal character principles and respect for our party constitution, the Party must make an unequivocal pronouncement zoning its presidential candidate to the South in the 2027 elections after the unbroken years of Northern President under President Muhammadu Buhari," the communiqué stated.

Key Stakeholders Present

The meeting was attended by several prominent PDP figures, including former governors Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Samuel Ortom (Benue), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia). Also present were the National Secretary of the PDP, Senator Samuel Anyanwu, former Senate Minority Leader Philip Aduda, as well as serving and former federal and state lawmakers, alongside zonal and state party executives.

The call comes amid ongoing discussions about power rotation in Nigeria's political landscape, particularly following the completion of former President Muhammadu Buhari's two terms in office.

This development represents a significant position from influential PDP members as the party begins early preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The meeting also reaffirmed Sam Anyanwu as the duly elected and substantive national secretary of the party, indicating efforts to solidify party leadership ahead of future electoral contests.

Political analysts note that this early zoning discussion could significantly impact the PDP's strategy and candidate selection process as Nigeria approaches another election cycle.
