Prominent leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have officially declared their support for Senator Sam Anyanwu as the legitimate National Secretary of the party following a high-level meeting in Abuja on Monday.
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike, who read the communiqué after the closed-door meeting, emphasized that the decision to reaffirm Anyanwu's position was based on both the Supreme Court's ruling and the PDP's constitution.
"We, therefore, unequivocally reaffirm Sen. Sam Anyanwu as the duly elected and substantive National Secretary of our great party," Wike stated firmly.
Party Crisis and Constitutional Concerns
According to Wike, the ongoing crisis within the PDP has persisted because certain members have refused to adhere to the party's established rules and constitution. He issued a stark warning about the party's future if the situation continues unchecked.
"The party is on an inevitable path to self-annihilation if urgent steps are not taken to stop the selfish and divisive actions of a few individuals," the FCT Minister cautioned.
Wike further clarified that according to the party's constitution, only the National Secretary has the authority to issue official notices for key meetings, including those of the National Executive Committee (NEC), National Working Committee (NWC), and the National Convention.
"To finally arrest the inexorable drift towards extinction in the party, the PDP must, without further delay, respect the judgment of the Supreme Court," he emphasized.
Implications for Party Administration
The communiqué made it clear that any notices not issued by Anyanwu, including correspondences to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), would be considered "null and void and of no effect whatsoever."
The stakeholders also called on all party members to respect the rule of law and support the National Reconciliation Committee led by former Senate President Bukola Saraki.
In a significant political development, the meeting also agreed that the PDP should clearly announce that its 2027 presidential ticket will go to the South.
"This is in the spirit of fairness, inclusion, and respect for federal character, especially after eight years of former President Muhammadu Buhari from the North," Wike explained.

The high-profile meeting was attended by several former governors including Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Samuel Ortom (Benue), and Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), as well as former Senate Minority Leader Philip Aduda. Numerous former lawmakers and party officials were also present at the gathering.
This development comes at a critical time for the PDP as it navigates internal challenges while preparing for future electoral contests.
