Former Governor of Ekiti State, Ayo Fayose, has revealed that his visit to President Bola Tinubu at his Lagos residence on Monday was to encourage the president in his efforts to stabilize the Nigerian economy.
Speaking to reporters after the meeting, Fayose explained that unlike his stance during the previous administration under Muhammadu Buhari, which he criticized, he has always believed in Tinubu's leadership capabilities.
"I was once a critic of the last administration but you can't compare the situation now," Fayose stated. "For me, I'm here to visit him for his homecoming, and encourage him to do more."
Long-standing Support Despite Party Differences
What makes Fayose's visit particularly noteworthy is his admission of supporting Tinubu even while serving as a governor elected under the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
"I have always believed in President Tinubu's leadership even when I was a PDP Governor," he revealed, suggesting that his support transcends party lines.
The former Ekiti governor further emphasized the need for Nigerian leaders to rally behind the president's economic stabilization efforts. "The only thing we can do as leaders of this country, is to encourage him to lift up his hands and make the public understand that [he's working to] lead an economy that was down and now being stabilized," Fayose added.
This meeting comes amid ongoing discussions about political realignments in Nigeria, with some speculating about possible defections among prominent politicians.
However, in related reports, Fayose has maintained that he has no intention of defecting to any other party, describing the PDP as a "carcass" following his visit to President Tinubu.
The visit also coincides with other notable figures expressing support for the Tinubu administration, including the Ewi of Ado-Ekiti who recently visited the president at his Lagos residence during Sallah celebrations.
