Former Ekiti State Governor, Ayodele Fayose, has firmly ruled out the possibility of defecting from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC), despite describing his party as "a carcass" due to its ongoing leadership crisis.
Speaking to journalists after a meeting with President Bola Tinubu in Lagos, the 65-year-old former governor was emphatic about his political stance.
"Let me first of all clear this, Ayodele Fayose is not moving from the PDP to any political party, this year I'm 65," Fayose stated. "It's within the choices of those who have chosen to move, some said they saw what the president is doing, some said they believe that the party is in trouble, and without doubt the PDP is in trouble which is the gospel truth."
PDP's Ongoing Crisis
The PDP has been embroiled in a leadership crisis since the build-up to the 2023 presidential election, primarily stemming from disagreements over the party's zoning formula. Fayose's comments highlight the severity of the situation within Nigeria's main opposition party.
"I believe that if they don't quickly take steps, the party in itself will become a carcass," he warned, adding, "I'm not in the frontline anymore and the little contribution I could have made, I did while on the seat."
Fayose's meeting with President Tinubu and his subsequent comments have raised eyebrows in political circles, especially as several opposition figures have recently defected to the ruling APC.
The former governor's remarks come at a time when the PDP continues to grapple with internal divisions that have weakened its position as the main opposition party in Nigeria.
Political analysts suggest that Fayose's decision to remain in the PDP despite his criticisms reflects his long-standing relationship with the party, having served two non-consecutive terms as Ekiti governor under its platform.
