Segun Sowunmi, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and former spokesman for Atiku Abubakar, has declared that President Bola Tinubu is "smarter" than his political opponents, including Labour Party's Peter Obi.
Speaking on Channels Television's Politics Today programme on Monday, Sowunmi addressed criticism following his recent visit to President Tinubu, emphasizing that the meeting did not constitute a betrayal of his affiliation with former Vice President Atiku Abubakar.
"I am at liberty as an adult to take decisions. I am not tied to anybody. I am not anti-Tinubu. I own my mouth, I own my words, and I own my arguments," Sowunmi stated during the interview.
Praise for Tinubu's Political Acumen
The PDP chieftain went further to praise President Tinubu's political intelligence, saying: "Do you know the difference between Bola and them? He doesn't have one approach to dealing with everybody. By miles, he (Tinubu) is smarter than them. He is smarter than Peter Obi, he is smarter than them."
Sowunmi's comments come amid a pattern of former Atiku aides establishing relationships with the Tinubu administration. In November 2024, Daniel Bwala, another former spokesman for Atiku and once a vocal critic of Tinubu, was appointed Special Adviser to the President on Policy Communication after meeting with him.
The development highlights the fluid nature of Nigerian political alliances as the country moves further into President Tinubu's administration.
BenriNews reports that these political realignments come as various opposition figures reconsider their positions in relation to the current administration.
