The National Secretary of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ajibola Basiru, has categorically denied reports suggesting he is in talks with former Osun State Governor Rauf Aregbesola regarding any political alliance ahead of upcoming elections.

In a statement released by the spokesperson of his campaign organization, Basiru dismissed the claims as completely false and baseless, emphasizing that such a political move would be "unimaginable" considering Aregbesola is no longer a member of the APC.

"The reports claiming that the APC National Secretary reached out to former Governor Aregbesola for reconciliation and possible alliance are entirely unfounded," the statement read.

Osun Governorship Ambitions

Basiru is currently among the aspirants vying for the APC's ticket for the Osun State governorship election scheduled for August next year. The clarification comes as political alignments begin to take shape in preparation for the contest.

BenriNews reports that the political landscape in Osun State has witnessed significant shifts in recent years, with various factions emerging within the state's political circles.

The denial from Basiru's camp appears aimed at clarifying his political position and distancing himself from any perceived association with Aregbesola, who has had a complicated relationship with the current APC leadership in the state.

Political Realignments

This development comes amid broader political realignments across Nigeria as parties begin early preparations for the 2027 general elections. In neighboring Akwa Ibom, the APC recently assured Governor Eno of full support following defection rumors, while in Abia State, Governor Otti has stated it's too early to discuss 2027 elections.

Political observers note that the early clarifications from Basiru indicate the sensitivity of political associations as parties begin to position themselves for upcoming electoral contests.
