PDP chieftain Dele Momodu has warned that the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) is deliberately working to fracture the People's Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 presidential elections, claiming that only a united coalition of opposition parties can successfully challenge President Bola Tinubu's bid for a second term.
Speaking on Tuesday during a program on the Broadcasting Corporation of Oyo State, Momodu expressed concern about the ruling party's tactics to weaken Nigeria's main opposition party.
"The APC is jittery of the PDP. They know it is the only opposition party that can challenge its dominance in 2027," Momodu stated. "This is one of the reasons why the leadership of the APC at all levels is ensuring that the party is factionalized."
Internal Challenges Facing PDP
The media mogul and former presidential aspirant highlighted that beyond external interference, the PDP faces significant internal challenges that threaten its viability as an opposition force.
"Another challenge is the problem within the party. Some of its members are being used to work against its stability and progress," he explained, suggesting that certain elements within the PDP might be compromised.
Strategy for 2027
Momodu emphasized that defeating the incumbent president would require a strategic approach, including careful consideration of regional dynamics in candidate selection.
"Only a strong coalition can remove Tinubu from office in 2027," Momodu asserted. "Also, whoever would contest favourably against the current president must come from the opposite direction in terms of regions in Nigeria."
His comments come amid ongoing discussions within opposition circles about the need for unity to present a formidable challenge to the ruling party in the next general elections.
The PDP, Nigeria's main opposition party, has faced internal divisions since its defeat in the 2023 presidential elections, with various factions emerging within its ranks.
Political analysts note that Momodu's call for a coalition strategy reflects growing recognition among opposition figures that a united front might be necessary to challenge the APC's hold on power in 2027.
