Veteran Nigerian highlife singer, Gentleman Mike Ejeagha, has been laid to rest just 24 hours after his death, in accordance with his final wishes.

The 95-year-old music legend passed away on Friday, June 6, 2025, following a prolonged battle with prostate cancer. His burial took place on Saturday, June 7, 2025, in his hometown of Umuagba, Imezi-Owa area of Enugu State.

Emmanuel Ejeagha, the deceased's first son, revealed that the swift burial was in line with his father's explicit request. "My father made a wish that he should be laid to rest 24 hours after death. And I reached out to my family. Even Governor Peter Mbah was aware, and they all consented that whatever his wish should be kept," he told reporters.

Legacy of a Folklorist

Mike Ejeagha, fondly known for his narrative style of highlife music and storytelling prowess, made significant contributions to Nigeria's musical heritage. His distinctive "Gwo gwo ngwo" sound became his signature, earning him recognition across generations.

The family has announced that details regarding memorial ceremonies to celebrate his life and musical legacy will be communicated at a later date.

Ejeagha's passing marks the end of an era in Nigerian traditional music, leaving behind a rich catalog of folk songs that captured cultural narratives and indigenous wisdom.
