British TV personality Piers Morgan has launched a scathing attack on former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag following Cristiano Ronaldo's triumphant performance in Portugal's UEFA Nations League victory over Spain.
The 40-year-old Portuguese captain netted a crucial equalizer as the match ended 2-2 after full-time, before Portugal prevailed 5-3 in the penalty shootout on Sunday.
With this victory, Portugal has made history as the first team to win the UEFA Nations League competition twice, having also claimed the inaugural title.
Morgan Criticizes Ten Hag's Treatment of Ronaldo
Morgan, a well-known supporter of Ronaldo, took to social media platform X to express his views on how Ten Hag handled the football icon during his time at Manchester United.
"Erik Ten Hag treated Ronaldo like dirt and drove him out of United. Roberto Martinez backed him to be his main man for Portugal at 40," Morgan wrote. "One got fired, the other just won a trophy. Moral? Don't disrespect the greatest to ever play the game."
Ronaldo's Manchester United Exit
The comments reference Ronaldo's second stint at Manchester United, which began in the summer of 2021 when he left Juventus for a reported €17 million. While Ronaldo initially thrived under Ole Gunnar Solskjær, the situation changed dramatically after Ten Hag's appointment.
The relationship between Ten Hag and Ronaldo quickly deteriorated, with the Dutch manager frequently sidelining the five-time Ballon d'Or winner. This frosty relationship ultimately led to Ronaldo's departure from the club.
Ten Hag was later sacked in 2024 following a series of poor results, with Ruben Amorim appointed as his replacement. The Dutchman has since taken over as manager at Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen.
Following the Nations League triumph, Ronaldo revealed he had played through injury during the final, further highlighting his commitment and determination even at this stage of his career.
