Portugal captain Cristiano Ronaldo has revealed that his children will now show him more respect after leading his country to victory against Spain in the UEFA Nations League final on Sunday.
The 40-year-old forward disclosed that his children, who are Spanish, often joke with him at home about Spain winning trophies to annoy him.
"My children are Spanish and they joke with me at home and to annoy me they say — 'the trophy is for Spain'," Ronaldo said in his post-match interview. "Now they saw their Dad win against Spain, so they will show more respect," he added with a laugh.
The match at the Allianz Arena in Munich ended in a 2-2 draw after 120 minutes, with Ronaldo finding the back of the net during the game. Portugal eventually claimed victory with a 5-3 win in the penalty shootout, thanks in part to Spain's Alvaro Morata missing his penalty kick.
Interestingly, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid star also revealed that he played in the Nations League final while carrying an injury, highlighting his commitment to the national team.
Portugal's Victory in Munich
The victory marks another significant achievement for Ronaldo, who continues to defy age with his performances at the international level. The win adds to Portugal's growing list of honors in recent years, following their Euro 2016 triumph and the inaugural Nations League title in 2019.
For Spain, the defeat will be particularly disappointing after their recent success at Euro 2024, where they emerged as champions.
The Nations League final also featured advice from Ronaldo to Spain's young star Lamine Yamal, with the Portuguese veteran reportedly telling the teenager to "be calm" following the match.
