The Enugu State Police Command successfully rescued an armed robbery suspect from an angry mob in the Independence Layout area of Enugu on Saturday evening, recovering a locally fabricated pistol in the process.
According to a statement released on Monday by the command's Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, the rescue operation was carried out around 8:00 pm on June 8 following credible intelligence received by the police.
The operation involved a combined team of police operatives from the Independence Layout Division and the Anti-Cultism Squad, working in collaboration with members of the Neighbourhood Watch.
Suspect Hospitalized with Severe Injuries
"A locally fabricated pistol was recovered from him, while his cohorts reportedly fled the scene," Ndukwe stated in the release.
The suspect, who sustained severe injuries from the mob attack, is currently receiving medical treatment at a local facility. During preliminary investigation, he allegedly confessed to being a member of the Black Axe Confraternity.
Police authorities confirmed that discreet investigations are ongoing to apprehend the suspect's accomplices who managed to escape during the incident.
Police Commissioner Condemns Mob Justice
The Enugu State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Mamman Giwa, commended the swift and collaborative efforts of the police operatives and community members that led to the arrest and recovery of the weapon.
However, the commissioner strongly cautioned against mob actions and jungle justice, emphasizing that such acts undermine proper investigation and the delivery of justice in criminal cases.
This incident highlights the ongoing security challenges in Enugu State and the importance of proper law enforcement procedures rather than citizens taking the law into their own hands.
