A faction of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Katsina State has announced plans to form a coalition with another political party to challenge and potentially unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) government in the upcoming 2027 elections.
The faction's leader, Alhaji Mustapha Inuwa, a former Secretary to the State Government (SSG), disclosed this during a meeting with party members and supporters in Katsina on Sunday.
New Political Alliance
According to Inuwa, the primary objective of this strategic move is to end APC's dominance at both state and national levels through a fresh political alliance.
"The coalition is working nationally with political heavyweights to form a solid, viable, and dependable platform capable of challenging the APC," Inuwa stated during the meeting.
He further revealed that a decision on the new platform would likely be finalized by the end of June by the movement's leadership, urging supporters to remain calm and continue backing the group's efforts.
Call for Progressive Minds
The former SSG extended an invitation to all progressive-minded individuals, regardless of their current political affiliations, to join the movement in pursuit of their shared vision and goal.
"Once we decide on the platform, we'll reconvene here and follow the template provided by the national leadership for local implementation," he assured supporters.
Criticism of Defections and Electoral Process
Inuwa advised supporters against defecting to the APC, comparing such moves to "leaving the frying pan only to land in the fire." He emphasized that switching from PDP to APC offers no real solution as both parties face similar internal challenges, particularly during their congresses.
The faction leader also criticized Katsina's local government elections, alleging that forms were only issued to government-approved candidates, and suggesting that future elections might follow the same pattern if left unchallenged.
"Our major concern remains the electorate, who are with us. We are with them. God willing, we will succeed," Inuwa concluded.
The announcement comes amid growing political realignments across Nigeria as parties begin early preparations for the 2027 general elections.
