President Donald Trump on Saturday declared his relationship with tech billionaire Elon Musk is over, following a public dispute over the president's sweeping tax and spending bill that has created tensions within the Republican party.
In a telephone interview with NBC News, Trump warned there would be "serious consequences" if Musk funds Democratic candidates running against Republicans who support the president's controversial legislation.
When asked directly if his relationship with the Tesla and SpaceX CEO was finished, Trump responded bluntly, "I would assume so, yeah." The president further emphasized he had "no intention of speaking to him" and no desire to repair their relationship.
Escalating Tensions Between Two Powerful Figures
The conflict began last week when Musk publicly denounced Trump's bill as a "disgusting abomination." This opposition reportedly complicated efforts to pass the legislation in Congress, where Republicans maintain only slim majorities in both the House of Representatives and Senate.
Despite the harsh rhetoric, Trump indicated he had not considered terminating US government contracts with Musk's StarLink satellite internet or SpaceX rocket launch companies. He also declined to specify what the "serious consequences" might entail, adding that he had not discussed investigating Musk.
The bill narrowly passed the House last month and is currently before the Senate, where Republicans are considering potential modifications to the legislation.
This public falling out marks a significant shift in the relationship between two of America's most influential figures, potentially impacting both political alignments and business interests as the administration moves forward with its economic agenda.
