The Jigawa State Government has completed the demarcation of 1,280.5 hectares of grazing reserves and 49.6 kilometers of cattle routes across the state in a strategic move to prevent clashes between farmers and herders.
Commissioner of Information, Youth, Sports and Culture, Sagir Musa Ahmad, revealed this development while briefing journalists after the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Umar Namadi on Thursday.
Areas Successfully Demarcated
According to the report submitted by the committee headed by Secretary to the State Government, Malam Bala Ibrahim, the following areas have been successfully demarcated:
695 hectares of Waza Grazing Reserve in Birnin Kudu LGA
500 hectares of Malamawa Gangara in Birnin Kudu LGA
700 hectares of Kwarsa Forest in Birnin Kudu LGA
2,300 hectares of Jarwawa Forest reserves in Birnin Kudu LGA
600 hectares in Wareri-Guri LGA
165 hectares of Barwa-Katanga Grazing Reserve in Kiyawa LGA
420 hectares of Zandauru Grazing Reserve in Gwaram LGA
Cattle Routes Demarcation
The report also detailed the successful demarcation of cattle routes, including:
11.3 km at Waza Farm Layout
Baranda Farm Layout covering major stock routes (100m width) spanning 24.7 km
Minor stock routes (30m width) covering 13.6 km
The commissioner added that demarcation work is still ongoing at Bagadaza in Gwaram LGA, while Dakaiyawa in Kaugama has been fully demarcated.
The State Executive Council commended the committee for its proactive and strategic efforts, describing the initiative as laudable and one that would promote environmental sustainability while enhancing peaceful coexistence among communities, especially farmers and herders across the state.
