Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia has made serious allegations against some serving National Assembly politicians, accusing them of sponsoring the deadly attacks on communities across the state.
Speaking during an interview on Channels Television's 'Politics Today' program on Friday, Governor Alia revealed that an interim report from a judicial panel he established has implicated several high-profile individuals in the ongoing security crisis.
Top Politicians Implicated in Benue Attacks
"It is very, very unsettling because top politicians who are very functional and are in the National Assembly and are in Abuja, are the architects and arrowheads of not just instigating, but harbouring and keeping these people and feeding them in the bushes, and taking care of all their needs and buying all the other gadgets for them," the governor stated.
While Governor Alia did not specifically name the accused politicians, he emphasized that their actions were "extremely unacceptable" and vowed to take decisive action once he receives the full report next week.
"We set up a judicial panel to sort out for us why we kept having attacks from within and from without, and we have received an interim report. Between Tuesday and Wednesday next week, I am going to get a full report from the panel," he added.
Recent Violence on Makurdi-Naka Road
The governor's allegations come amid reports of fresh attacks on the Makurdi–Naka road on Friday, where several persons were feared dead and many others injured after suspected armed herdsmen launched an assault on travelers.
According to local sources, the Makurdi–Naka road has remained under the control of armed Fulani militia groups for weeks, despite repeated assurances of military intervention to secure the area.
Governor Alia emphasized his commitment to protecting the citizens of Benue State, stating, "If they do not love the lives of the people and they're only fighting for their own position, I think I am serving the interest of the common masses and it is a concern to me, and it is my right to protect it."
The security situation in Benue State has deteriorated in recent months, with multiple communities suffering attacks that have resulted in casualties and displacement of residents.
