The family of veteran Nigerian folk musician, Mike Ejeagha, has disclosed that the iconic singer died of prostate cancer at the age of 95. The 'Gwo gwo ngwo' crooner passed away on Friday evening at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu.
In an interview on Saturday morning, the singer's eldest son, Emma Ejeagha, revealed that his father had been battling prostate cancer since 2006. "Papa died on Friday, at 8 p.m. and his body has been deposited in the mortuary. I was with him during his final moments," Emma stated.
Emma further disclosed that the late musician had given specific instructions regarding his burial arrangements, requesting that his body should not be embalmed or kept in the morgue for an extended period.
Legacy Revived Through Social Media
Mike Ejeagha's 1983 classic song 'Gwo gwo ngwo' experienced a remarkable resurgence in popularity earlier this year when popular Nigerian skit maker, Brain Jotter, incorporated the song into a global dance challenge that went viral across social media platforms.
The challenge brought renewed attention to Ejeagha's musical contributions and introduced his traditional folk sounds to a younger generation of Nigerians and international audiences.
As reported by BenriNews earlier, President Bola Tinubu described the late Mike Ejeagha as "one of Nigeria's greatest folklorists," highlighting the significant cultural impact of the musician's work in preserving and promoting Nigerian heritage through his music.
The passing of Mike Ejeagha marks the end of an era in Nigeria's folk music scene, leaving behind a rich legacy that continues to resonate across generations.
