Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to FCT Minister Nyesom Wike, has launched a scathing attack against former presidential spokesman Reuben Abati for labeling the Minister as "rude" during a television broadcast.
The confrontation erupted after Abati, while defending former Transportation Minister Rotimi Amaechi on Arise Television, claimed that "Wike is very rude and disrespectful because Amaechi is his boss in politics." Abati had further stated that Amaechi helped Wike become a Local Government Chairman and subsequently recommended him for the position of Minister of State for Education.
EFCC Bailout Revelation
In a fiery response on Arise Television's Morning Show, Olayinka accused Abati of hypocrisy, revealing that the former presidential spokesman had previously sought financial assistance from Wike during his troubles with the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
"When he had issues with EFCC and had to pay back the money he got from Dasuki loot, he and his wife knew the road to Wike's house, to beg for a bailout which he got, but Wike was not rude then," Olayinka claimed.
"I want to suggest that since he's now Amaechi's spokesman, he should excuse himself from Arise TV and go do his job properly, he should not be using the platform provided by respected Nigerians like the Duke to ventilate his anger, frustration, and hatred for Wike."
Questioning Journalistic Ethics
Olayinka expressed shock at Abati's comments, suggesting they violated journalistic principles. "In journalism, we are not supposed to have an opinion. I was shocked to hear him turning himself to the spokesperson of Amaechi," he stated.
The FCT Minister's aide also criticized Abati's political past, referencing his candidacy as a PDP deputy governorship candidate in Ogun State alongside someone allegedly wanted by American authorities for drug trafficking.
Background of the Feud
The exchange stems from Wike's earlier comments that Amaechi was "hungry for power" and failed to deliver significant votes for former Vice President Atiku Abubakar in the 2023 presidential election. This remark prompted Abati's defense of Amaechi, which in turn triggered Olayinka's response.
The public spat highlights the ongoing political rivalry between Wike and Amaechi, both influential figures from Rivers State who have maintained a contentious relationship over the years.
